Copper T – When to opt for it

blog post

What is Copper T?
Copper T is an intrauterine contraceptive device which is a very effective, safe, and inexpensive contraceptive method, especially for those who have borne children. The device is tiny and comes in the shape of a ‘T’ made up of plastic, wrapped in copper hence the name “Copper T”.

An expert must insert copper T as it is an invasive procedure. This device is placed inside the uterus with a thread that is left hanging out of the cervix into the vagina. Copper T can last up to 5 to 10 years depending on the type used. It is a perfect form of contraception with a lower failure rate. The ability of a woman to become pregnant rapidly returns once the copper t is removed. If one finds taking pills every day tedious, condoms give less satisfaction or if one finds other methods expensive, then copper T is a perfect choice.

Types of Copper T

Generally, Copper T or we can say an intrauterine device is of two types used to prevent an undesirable pregnancy. This of two types:

  • Regular copper T: A regular copper T, also known as a copper intrauterine device (IUD), is a small, T-shaped plastic device wrapped in copper that’s inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The copper IUD works by slowly releasing copper into the uterus, which prevents sperm from fertilizing an egg. It’s more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and can last up to 10 years.
  • Multiloa: the other type is known as Multiona. As we have mentioned earlier, this is a copper-coated intrauterine device that works by releasing copper ions to inhibit a pregnancy or the process of fertilization. This type of IUD differs from the regular Copper T in terms of shape or insertion technique.

How Does It Work?

A Copper T is made up of plastic and wrapped in a copper coil. This intrauterine device is placed inside the uterus and functions by releasing copper ions. Sperm can not get fertilized in the presence of copper as it kills the sperm and prevents the embryo (baby) from implanting into the uterus lining. Copper also changes the lining of the uterus and creates a less ideal environment for sperm.

This (IUD) intrauterine device works as an emergency contraception to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

Benefits Of Copper T

A copper IUD acts as a non-hormonal birth control, and offers the following benefits:

  • A single insertion works for years hence it is relatively inexpensive.
  • No need for maintenance.
  • One might opt for this due to the annoyance of daily taking of pills/uncomfortable use of condoms.
  • No medications restrict its working.
  • You can use it while breastfeeding.
  • It does not affect fertility, and its effects are rapidly reversed when the device is removed and the couple can conceive naturally without difficulty.

Risks Of Copper T

With several benefits, Copper T may pose some potential risks also, which include:

  • It may increase the risk of excessive bleeding/ painful menstruation.
  • It can get expelled spontaneously, and you may get pregnant.
  • It does not prevent STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). Condoms are the best way for sexually active people to reduce the risk of SUIs, and infections.
  • Sometimes, in extremely rare cases it may perforate, which means wrongly positioned and may enter the abdomen. In this case, surgery may be required to remove the IUD, only if it happens.

Timing of Insertion

Copper-T is only effective when it gets inserted during the following scenarios:

  • Preferably 2-3 days after the menstruation is over.
  • If you are a breastfeeding mother and not having periods-then it can be inserted anytime.
  • Immediately following an abortion.
  • Immediately following childbirth
  • 6 weeks after the abortion or childbirth if the IUD was not inserted immediately.

Who are the Ideal Candidates for Copper T Insertion?

Copper T is an effective method of contraception for couples who want to space their pregnancies, who have had previous childbirths, breastfeeding mothers, and those who want to limit the number of children once their family is completed. Since it can be used for 10 years it is a good alternative for sterilization.

It is a good method of emergency contraception if inserted within 5-7 days of unprotected intercourse (failure rate 0.05%)the additional advantage is that it will prevent pregnancy for as long as it is in place!
It can be inserted immediately after an abortion with the additional benefit of preventing the walls of the uterus from getting stuck to each other.

Conclusion

Though Copper-T is an effective and convenient birth control method, it is not a suitable option for everyone. Like all forms of contraception, this too may pose some potential risks and complications.
