Copper T – When to opt for it

blog post

WHAT IS COPPER T?
Copper T is an intrauterine contraceptive device which is a very effective, safe and inexpensive contraceptive method especially for those who have borne children. The device is tiny and comes in the shape of a ‘T’ made up of plastic, wrapped in copper and hence the name “Copper T”.

Insertion of copper T has to be done by an expert as it is an invasive procedure .This device is placed inside the uterus with a thread which is left hanging out of the cervix into the vagina. Copper T can last up to 5 to 10 years depending on the type used. It is a very good form of contraception and very low failure rate .The ability of a woman to become pregnant rapidly returns once the copper t is removed. If one finds taking pills every day tedious, condom is giving less satisfaction or if one is finding other methods expensive, then copper T is a perfect choice.

TYPES
Regular copper T
Multiload

HOW DOES IT WORK?
A copper T releases copper ions once it is inside the uterus. It kills the sperms or if fertilization does take place, it prevents the embryo (baby) from implanting (settling) into the lining of the uterus.

BENEFITS OF COPPER T

No need for maintenance.
One can do away with daily taking in of pills/ uncomfortable use of condoms.
Does not affect fertility, its effects are rapidly reversed when the device is removed and the couple usually is able to conceive without difficulty.

RISKs OF COPPER T
May increase the risk of excessive bleeding/ painful cycles.
Can get expelled spontaneously.
Does not prevent STD s.
