Ans: Normal delivery is carried out by carefully monitoring and increasing labour pains with the help of a drip. Careful watch is kept on the baby’s heartbeat (by stethoscope/Doppler/NST machine) as well. The doctor assesses the progress of labour by seeing the contractions (manually/ by CTG machine) and doing internal examinations as needed. When the baby’s head is visible the doctor cuts the perineum (episiotomy) to make the baby’s exit easy. The baby is handed over to the child specialist. Next, the placenta is delivered. In the end, the cut (episiotomy) is stitched in layers.
Ans: You should know that you have to eat right to help the baby grow properly so that you don’t gain excess weight. Good nutrition means a healthy balanced diet along with medications.
A very heavy baby or a very weak baby will have less chance of delivering normally as these might be associated with pregnancy complications. Adequate hydration is equally important. A minimum of 10-12 glasses of water are needed to keep your system healthy.
Regular exercise also plays an important role. During pregnancy, if you do not exercise, your joints will become stiff and decrease your chances of delivering normally. Broadly you should exercise to prevent unnecessary weight gain and prevent your joints from becoming stiff. Pelvic exercises will help in preparing the birth passage for a smooth transition of the baby. Lastly breathing exercises and meditation will help you take the labour pains easily and have a positive outlook.
Expert antenatal care, encouraging doctors, a determined patient and a supportive family all contribute towards a normal delivery.
Ans: Normal delivery cannot occur without labour pains. Initially, at the start of labour, the pains are mild and occur at less frequent intervals. As time passes and labour progresses the pains occur more frequently and towards the last stages the pains will last for any time like 45 sec occurring every 1.5 to 2 minutes This means that the intensity of pain increases as time passes. In the end, if you are mentally prepared to take the labour pains you might not feel that much distress at all since pain is a very subjective feeling. Epidural anaesthesia is the option for those who are not able to tolerate the pain.
Ans: For a normal delivery to occur the patient should be ready to take labour pains and cooperate with the doctor and staff for monitoring by internal examination and CTG machine although it does take a lot of effort from the patient /hospital staff & Gynaecologist, it is not very difficult. An encouraging environment and warmth from your gynaecologist will make your task easier.
Ans: Normal delivery is facilitated by cutting the end of the birth passage better known as episiotomy. This area involves the lower end of the vagina and external area as well. After delivery, this is repaired in three layers. The stitches are many but to the patient around 5 to 10 stitches will be visible externally.
Ans: There are three stages of normal delivery.
Ans: Dr Ruchi Rai Ahuja says normal delivery is possible up to a certain amniotic fluid level. Generally, a gynaecologist assesses the overall situation i.e. the size of the baby, AFI (amount of amniotic fluid), the assessment of birth passage, whether is it a first or second delivery and associated pregnancy complications etc.
