Breasts or mammary glands are a pair of modified “sebaceous glands”(oil glands). The fully developed breasts lie on the chest wall extending from the 2^nd to 6 th rib (above downwards) and from the middle of the breast bone to the middle of the sides on each side a tail of breast( Axillary tail of Spence ) also extends to the armpit on each side   . Each breast is divided into lobes 15 to 20 lobes which end at the nipple by means of milk ducts. In between the lobes is the fatty tissue.

The breast is a dynamic organ which experiences changes according to variations in a plethora of hormones in the woman’s body .These hormonal the first changes start occurring at puberty they continue till menopause. After menopause the cyclical changes stop and the breasts start to shrink in size.

So one can imagine that each lobe of the breast is like a tree having a trunk (milk duct) starting at the nipple and dividing into branches and sub branches and ending as the milk producing glands (acini) . There are 15 to 20 such lobes. In between the lobes there is fibrous tissue and fat. During the reproductive phase of the woman from adolescence to menopause the breast undergoes cyclical changes with each menstrual cycle .Breast size is subject to these hormonal changes as well as changes in fat of the breasts (with weight changes). There are hormonal events in a woman’s life when there are sudden changes in the hormones these phases are seen during puberty, pregnancy, lactation & menopause. Also other hormonal conditions like thyroid disorders, pcod etc also can affect the breast. During these hormonal events various breast related issues can arise.
